I finally found another place to satisfy the pinball fiend in me - Ground Kontrol, in Portland, Oregon (511 NW Couch St., in the Pearl District). We spent the weekend in Portland dinking around downtown, walking from one place to another, and came across this place with a loudspeaker outside making classic arcade noises, though it was clearly closed. I peered in the darkened glass and saw Galaga, Tempest, Dig Dug, and all sorts of other old school classics - and the holy of holies, a sign saying "Pinball Arcade Upstairs." Needless to say we returned when they were opened and gamed our little hearts out. It helped that they 1) served beer (even though I only had a root beer) and are 2) non-smoking - and they had a fantastic DJ who was playing Blondie and Bow Wow Wow and Romeo Void and all of the great new wave hits that would have NEVER been played in an arcade "back in the day," which I can attest to as I was in the arcade in Paradise Valley Mall back in 1982-85, and all you heard was metal (think "Loverboy" and "Cheap Trick"). Thank God for MTV, you know what I mean? And I was willing to live the DJs fantasy that this is what it was really like back in an arcade before most of the kids in the place were out of their diapers, since the music made me bouncy and happy.
Anyway, for yez hardcore pinball geeks, I wrote up all of the games they had there so if you've got the hankering you can indulge. Some of them aren't in the best shape, though, but the glory of so many machines in one place is not to be underestimated.
Addams Family
Haunted House (a new one for me!)
Star Trek (original)
Star Trek - Next Generation
Eight Ball Champ
Black Knight
Black Knight 2000
Police Force
High Speed
Demolition Man
Terminator 2
Charlie's Angels
Hi Deal (with a King Kong and cards theme - a new one for me!)
Solar City (a new one but looked like the same layout as Desperado)
Star Wars (the one that's all three movies in one, but not the excellent one where you shoot the Death Star)
Radical (a new one for me)
Space Invaders (I used to like this a lot but it didn't seem to play so well)
Fish Tales
King Pin

I'm curious about how much walking I do in a day. 10,000 a day is supposed to be "right;" adding 1000 steps is supposed to lead to weight loss. And if you walk a certain number of steps you can walk to Rivendell.
Today, I figured out it's 1400 steps to walk to the cafeteria at BCC.
On a day when I take the bus to work, I walked 5000 steps.
Next question: what's average for me, and how much is the full stroll around BCC?

My sewing continues apace. I'm trying to get five blocks done of these "celtic animals" from Musgrave designs, but with two down the order I put in to Fantasy Crafts hasn't shown up yet and I've had to go with Claire's Celtic Cornucopia again. (The problem is that since Musgrave is going out of business I'm having a hard time finding patterns I don't already have, so I can only use one of the ones that's remaining at Claire's.) I've appended my shopping list so I remember what I've bought.
