Email from my boss:

We're a small company so it's informal, but we do have a dress code. It's pretty simple common sense stuff -- no ripped jeans or T-shirts with political statements. Another case is a shirt that jabs at our customers.

It's a fine line, I know, but your "Microsoul" shirt goes against that policy.

It doesn't happen often, but at any time, a client is free to drop by. Microsoft happens to be one of our biggest clients. Actually it doesn't have to be a Microsoft rep that stops by, it can be any client who could read your statement and think us unprofessional.

I'll be sending a generic message about dress code to other members of the team as well, but now you know. Thanks for your cooperation.

Jon Bach

My boss had some elementary school kids in to test software (to see how fun it was, I guess) last night. He had them take test notes and showed them to us as examples of "below the bare minimum." The notes were hysterical, though.

Test result one:
Too hard.

Test results two:
Programming is bad.

I'd love to turn in bug reports that said that!

Of course, if I were half the tester I'm supposed to be I wouldn't be entering this in my blog right now but rather working on my end of day report. However, I like seeing stuff like this so much I want to have it here for posterity. I think I'm also going to include a session report just so I can show how damn long and dull my status reports have to be in order to keep everyone happy.

"... just wanted to say you did an outstanding job today.

I liked both the quantity and quality of what you filed today, especially on a day I thought would be flat. You said on Friday that the Search area would yield a lot of fruit, and you did not disappoint. And your attentiveness to my communication timelines with (our client) is what I consider to be an excellent service to me today. It not only helped me, but it helped (our company) live up to the expectations we want our customers to have -- that they can expect useful, timely status as a professional courtesy.

Well done, and thanks for helping be a more effective test lead to our customer! I'm forwarding this on to (bossman) as well."

The Maltby Cafe doesn't actually make the best cinnamon rolls around. They're good, mind you, especially if you like almond flavoring, but for my money you can't beat the Essential Bakery's, which come with toasted pecan and have the perfect gooey-on-top crispy-below texture that Maltby's lacks. However ...

The food at the Maltby Cafe is delicious, the kind of upscale, great ingredients kind of food that I think Northwesterners just wind up taking for granted. Sausages from the Cascioppo Brothers, home-made buttermilk biscuits served with freezer jam ... everything is just basically perfect. Whatever your idea is of the world's most awesome club sandwich is, that is what you will taste when you order the Maltby Club. And you'll forget, and you'll go to some other sandwich joint, and suddenly you'll be wondering, is that all there is to a club sandwich? No super thick, chewy bacon slices, no sharp cheddar cheese, no roasted turkey breast? You'll be thinking longingly of the day you made it to Maltby and had lunch.

Anyway, there is so very little about the Maltby Cafe online, I thought I'd take it upon myself to get their menu online. Google has been pretty good about picking up the stuff I put up here, so with any luck some other hungry soul will be able to find my site and use this information to their benefit (and if that's you, why not make a little comment? I'd love to hear from the people that find my site completely at random).

My story on First Thursday is being cut from Tablet, because apparently someone else was covering the same thing and I misinterpreted my assignment. Poop. (I could have spent those two or three hours much more productively, like writing a story that would actually have been printed, if I'd known.) So I'm putting it here for the world to see, like anyone will really care about it besides me. But hey, I wrote it, at least.

It's 3:30 PM and 86 degrees Farenheith in the Q*** Easy Bake Office. Yuck!

Had a great time at art walk last night. I was researching a Tablet story and spent a lot of time talking to artists as well as city bureaucrats. I had an especially fun conversation with a painter about how fun it is living in Seattle, getting to ride ferries and hang out in leafy plazas and stuff. (There are also some interesting stories about the fattening nature of life in the suburbs and live at work out there right now that I think relate strongly to my desire to work in the city.)
